The Olympic Park soil project was one of the largest and most complex landscape undertakings in the UK. As part of the London 2012 “Greenest Games Ever” initiative, Freeland Horticulture played a pivotal role in designing and delivering bespoke soils to meet strict ecological and sustainability targets.
To support the diverse ecologies required across the Olympic Park, our soil scientist, George Longmuir, developed 12 specialist soil types. Each blend was carefully engineered to balance chemical composition and nutrient levels, ensuring the successful growth of thousands of plant species.
Central to the Olympic Park soil project was sustainability. Freeland integrated recycled green waste compost, with recycled material content ranging from 15% to 40% depending on soil type. This approach reduced environmental impact while meeting the technical needs of woodland, wetland, and meadow planting areas.

Every soil blend underwent rigorous analysis and testing to guarantee consistency in performance. The soils were transported to our production sites in Rainham, Essex, and Sevenoaks, Kent, where they were processed, blended, and quality-checked before being delivered to the Olympic Park.
Freeland supplied over 90% of all soils used in the Olympic Park soil project. Beyond construction, our technical team provided continuous support and analysis to maintain soil quality through the park’s legacy phase. Today, these soils continue to sustain diverse habitats, ensuring that the Olympic Park remains a model for ecological restoration and urban green space.
