Case Study – The Eden Project

Our Eden Soil Project

The Eden Project soil solutions case study highlights one of Freeland Horticulture’s most ambitious projects. Tasked with creating bespoke soils to support tropical and Mediterranean species in the UK, we designed, tested, and produced 100,000m³ of specialist soil blends that transformed a former quarry into one of the country’s most iconic ecological attractions.

Designing Soils for Unique Climates

The Eden Project presented a unique challenge: developing soils capable of sustaining foreign plants rarely able to thrive in the UK’s climate. Working with Reading University, Freeland engineered Eden Project soil solutions using waste mica sand from local china clay works, combined with tailored organic matter. These blends recreated the growing conditions of distant climates, enabling exotic plants to establish and flourish.

The Eden Project was a project we were proud to work on.

Extensive Testing & Research

Over nine months of soil trials and grower testing were carried out to confirm the success of our Eden Project soil solutions. Each soil blend was assessed for its structural, chemical, and biological properties to ensure optimal performance under glasshouse conditions. Only after this rigorous testing was full-scale production initiated.

Large-Scale Soil Production

Freeland mobilised production staff, equipment, and screening plant directly to Cornwall. On-site, we created and blended 100,000m³ of soil in the adjacent quarry, ensuring a seamless supply chain. This large-scale operation delivered soils directly into the Eden Project domes, guaranteeing consistent quality and performance throughout.

Legacy of the Eden Project

The Eden Project soil solutions we developed continue to support one of the UK’s most innovative and sustainable landscape schemes. By recreating tropical and Mediterranean environments, our soils have enabled the Eden Project to thrive as both a conservation hub and an educational centre, demonstrating the critical role of science-led horticulture in environmental success.
