Traditional topsoil was unsuitable for this rooftop environment due to its weight and compaction risk. To overcome this, Freeland engineered bespoke Jubilee Park soil solutions that combined lightweight properties with the strength and fertility required to support diverse plant species.
The soils were designed to sustain a wide range of vegetation, including Dawn Redwood, Flowering Cherries, Swamp Cypress, Evergreen Oak, and over 18,000 ornamental plants. A critical factor in the design was water infiltration. Our soil blends allowed effective drainage into the subsoil layers, preventing waterlogging while maintaining the health of the rooftop landscape. These innovations provided long-term stability and resilience in a challenging urban setting.
