About Us

Us

Leading soil innovation from Freeland Horticulture.

About Freeland Horticulture: Founded in 1993 by soil scientist George Longmuir, we have grown into the UK’s most trusted supplier of soils and compost solutions. With George’s MSc in Soil Science and decades of expertise, our company combines scientific precision with sustainability to deliver high-quality soil products for landscaping, construction, and environmental projects nationwide.

Today, we produce over 700,000 cubic meters of soil and 150,000 tonnes of compost from our 14 strategically located production sites. Our soils are certified to the British Standard BS3882 and BS8601, providing clients with confidence that every load meets the highest levels of quality and consistency. We have our soil independently tested on a regular basis.

Our products support a wide range of projects — from major civil engineering and infrastructure works to housing developments, landscaping schemes, and ecological restoration. We are proud to have supplied soils to some of the UK’s most significant projects, including the Olympic Park in London, The Tower of London and HMP Prisons.

At the heart of Freeland is a commitment to scientific integrity, technical expertise, and sustainable solutions. This focus has made us a trusted partner for contractors, developers, and environmental specialists across the country.

Some Of Our Experts

George Longmuir

Managing Director
George Longmuir, founder and Managing Director of Freeland Horticulture, holds an MSc in Soil Science. He began his career at ICI in the fertiliser division, gaining extensive experience in the science of soils within a commercial setting.

In the early 1990s, George pioneered green waste composting in the UK before establishing Freeland to bring a more scientific approach to soils, growing media, and composting. He was the first to mass-market compost from green waste in the UK, supplying major retailers including B&Q, Homebase, and Wyevale Garden Centres.

To ensure consistent, high-quality compost for the UK retail market, George founded the APEX collaboration, uniting SITA, Veolia, and Cleanaway. APEX went on to win four key environmental awards in 2003–2004 for its achievements.

Since then, he has played a pivotal role in the company’s growth, contributing to the
expansion of our operations from just 2 sites to the 14 we have today.
With extensive knowledge of both production and soils, Patricio ensures that all soils are
produced to the highest standards and meet the required specifications. His dedication,
expertise, and tireless work ethic make him an invaluable member of the Freeland team.
